While they didn't specifically cite the play for their decision to cut Monroe, the Pirates were unhappy when he jogged to first on a third strike

Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella, left, and bench coach Alan Trammell watch the final out in the ninth inning of the Cubs' 3-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates in a baseball game in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, June 30, 2009.

Their bench was thin, their minds admittedly jumbled a few hours after watching three more teammates leave. The Pirates had every reason to expect to lose to the Cubs after management effectively told them they're not ready yet to win. Ross Ohlendorf and Freddy Sanchez made certain it wouldn't happen.

Pirates Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

It seems nearly every team in the major leagues can still be considered a contender.

Even the Pirates, a franchise that has not seen postseason play since 1992, just before its current string of 16 consecutive losing seasons.

Twenty-four of the 30 major league teams began play Monday within five games of a playoff spot. That included the Pirates, who were last in the six-team National League Central going into a three-game home series with the Chicago Cubs.

Despite their last-place standing, the Pirates were five games behind first-place Milwaukee, though they dropped to six after losing 3-2 to the Cubs while the Brewers beat the New York Mets.

“I would say we’re right there, wouldn’t you?” Pirates manager John Russell said.

Pirates Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Ian Snell claims he asked to be demoted to the minor leagues. Pirates general manager Neal Huntington says the semantics don’t really matter.

Regardless, the Pirates optioned the enigmatic right-hander to Class AAA Indianapolis prior to Thursday night’s 3-2 win over Cleveland.

Snell is 2-8 with a 5.36 ERA in 15 starts this season, looking like a shell of the pitcher who won 14 games in 2006 during his first full season in the major leagues. In 61 starts since the 2007 All-Star break, he is 11-27 with a 5.24 ERA in 61 games.

“I think it’s for my own good,” Snell said. “I can go down and work on my stuff. I feel there’s too much negativity here. I need to be somewhere positive.

Pirates Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

The Pirates took their share of heat for not bringing Andrew McCutchen north at the end of spring training.

The 22-year-old outfielder was the phenom of spring training, and many felt the Pirates should have picked him as the starting left fielder over Nyjer Morgan. Yet, the Pirates sent McCutchen back to Class AAA Indianapolis, where he spent all of last season.

McCutchen has gotten off to a great start in his major league career. He is hitting .325 with one home run, 14 RBIs and three stolen bases in 18 games after going 1-for-5 with an RBI in a 5-4 loss to Cleveland on Tuesday.

That would seem to leave the impression McCutchen would have helped the Pirates from the beginning of the season.
